5 Questions to Ask Before Migrating Talent Data

March 18, 2019

No matter how eager (or urgently forced....) you are to migrate talent data (for ATS, CRM, HRMS or any other talent data system), it's important to manage expectations and know what you're getting into before getting started. In this post, we'll examine some common questions your team should consider before migrating talent data.

Do I Need to Merge Data From Multiple Systems?

Depending on how organized your pre-migration talent data management was, your number may vary. Work with your team to identify all the mechanisms you've used to collect data to ensure there are no gaps. While this may seem daunting, this process is easier than you think. Just make sure you choose an integration platform with the ability to connect multiple systems.

How Much Data Should I Bring?

If you want to build a comprehensive picture of data collected prior to the migration, the answer to this question is simple: all of it. This helps you avoid losing history with former employees and candidates. This will also allow you to utilize longitudinal analysis and machine learning to analyze complex data sets.

Should I Refresh My Data Rather Than Lose It?

No matter what your migration plan entails, the answer to this question should be a resounding yes. Publicly available data is easy to lose, so it's important to refresh your data to ensure you don't have gaps after the migration occurs. This can lead to incomplete talent data which is difficult to recover later.

What If My New System Has Different Fields?

The fields on your new platform may not quite match the ones in the system you previously used. This is why it's important to choose a platform with the ability to include additional data in a data lake.  That way you migrate what you can...and then you can display the rest of your data right in your new system using a browser extension!  NO data needs to be lost (including your IBM Kenexa Brassring forms).

How Will My Choices Impact My Ability to Do Machine Learning and AI?

It's important to consider that machine learning and AI both require lots of data to operate. That's why you should partner with a provider and platform able to migrate as much of your data as possible from as many separate systems as possible.
