Can Computers Learn like Humans? Apparently So...

ComputerBrainWhat do humans and computers have in common? More than you might think. Despite the growing intricacies of computers, the human brain is still considered the most complex object in the known universe. Made up of over 100 billion neurons, the neural connections change and adapt as humans learn new information and tasks. This methodology is now being applied to artificial intelligence in the form of deep learning and provides insight on not only how computers learn but what they may be capable of in the future.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Simply put, artificial intelligence is the ability of a machine to learn, problem-solve and perform increasing more complicated tasks. Primates and some bird species have a unique talent for learning through observation thanks to our brains possessing mirror neurons. These special nerve cells allow us to perceive, gather and learn information without having to actually perform the action. They also assist in deciphering complex information like learning a language and distinguishing different voices. Mirror neurons are inspiring the way we try to teach computers to operate at an increasingly more complicated level.

Deep Learning gets Deeper

Deep learning has become the forerunner technique for how we help artificial intelligence become, well, intelligent. Computers learn through programs and when applied in proper sequence, can cascade into a very successful form of machine learning. One example was teaching a computer to distinguish between different voices in a crowded restaurant. At first, the voices appeared as noise but when provided with a transcript, the computer began to decipher words and then voices and later voices that it had not previously heard before. This process is similar to how a human baby learns a language.

A More Intelligent Future

Can computers learn like humans? It would appear that in some circumstances, they can. Currently, artificially intelligent machines can beat the world chess master, drive cars, analyze data, capture images, virtually shop and provide personalized healthcare. It's inevitable that with more research pumping into the artificial intelligence field, it is only a matter of time before computers will be able to do so much more. With SwoopTalent, we can help you analyze your data and use it to connect all your systems and power AI and machine learning to fully reach your business' potential. Contact us for a smarter future.
