Online Sourcing: Aggregation Saves a LOT of time

Google+ by itself has over 300 million active users. Linkedin is not far behind with a little over 200 million active users. These sites, and sites like them, are growing rapidly as professionals begin to understand the impact a social media presence has their careers. Keep in mind that these are only two of the top professional networking websites. It is no wonder that online sourcing is a daunting task. After all, who can justify spending hours, days, weeks, or even months sifting through active users on Google+ or Linkedin when there is no guarantee that one stellar candidate will surface?

The task becomes even more confusing when you include the different social networking websites and the websites’ specializations. Stackoverflow and Github open source type programmers (but not so many of the enterprise programming types), Dribbble has designers, Elance freelancers, Google+ and LinkedIn all kinds, Blogger more content than you can imagine....and so on, and so on, and so on. There are DOZENS of these sites, and that doesn't even include the thousands of personal sites full of good stuff. Of course, it doesn't take long to look for something. Say you google for a user experience designer resume, and you find one. Then you google the person and you find a Google+ profile, and a LinkedIn profile, and maybe a blog. You read all of these, and you follow all the links on them. That probably took you 10-15 minutes. Even if it's just 10, that's ten minutes for every single person, and that doesn't even count the time you take to read the profiles and filter through the content.

Then you do it all again, and again, and again. And you track what you've found, and build your profiles and take your notes. That's starting to be a LOT of time.

Now, think about doing that in a social data aggregator. Search for UX folks, and you'll be able to look at every place that ten candidates are online in the time it used to take you to look comprehensively at two of them. All of the details (and your notes) are stored, and you can forward the aggregated profiles.
